Italian characters, recognized properly
Accented vowels (à, è, é, ì, ò, ù) are recognized as real characters, so città and perché copy out with their accents.
Handwritten Italian is recognized too, alongside printed text on the same page. Neat block letters come out best; hurried cursive is less reliable.
No language setting needed
You don't pick a language. The OCR detects it on each page, so a folder of Italian files and English files can go in the same batch.
Pages that mix Italian with English or German, as in South Tyrol, are handled without choosing a language.
Searching Italian text in the result
Italian uses many elisions, such as l'anno and dell'azienda. Depending on the scan, the OCR may output a straight or curly apostrophe, and viewers treat them differently. If a phrase doesn't match, search for the word after the apostrophe.
Italian documents people convert
- Invoices and receipts (fatture, ricevute)
- Contracts and leases (contratti)
- Notarial deeds (atti notarili)
- Payslips (buste paga) and HR records
- Handwritten forms and notes
Older and harder documents
Typewritten and older printed pages generally work well. Faint photocopies and low-resolution scans cause most errors, so scan at 300 dpi where you can.
If a file already has a text layer, it is returned unchanged. Tick Force OCR to replace a poor existing text layer; see how Force OCR works.
